When someone gets assaulted many may say, that person was in the wrong place at wrong time. I would have to say that I do not agree with that. When you are not aware of your surroundings your chances of being attack increases. Being vigilant at all times when you are a woman on your own is a must. If you see something that does not look right trust your intuition it never fails. Someone is always watching, and if you get careless, you can become a victim.  If you live by yourself, it helps to keep the light on your house or apartment. Getting to know your neighbors is a plus since they will be able to alert you of any suspicious behavior or strange activity around your place. When running errands and decide you need to drive, make sure you get in the car can lock it immediately. Even when you are pumping gas in the car make sure you lock your car to prevent a complete stranger form getting in the vehicle and to prevent your purse form being stolen. If you like to run in the park early on the morning or at night always go with a partner. Another suggestion would be to carry a pepper spray key chain for personal safety. It’s a great device to carry when you are on your own. These simple tips and suggestions can reduce your risk of an assault.

Media can have a significant impact on body image because it is showing an illusion for what is to be considered ideal in our society. It is something that affects women more than men and a very young age. Female teens are influenced by media and by others opinions. It can be alarming because it can trigger multiple issues such body image insecurity, depression and eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia. Media frequently depict people who are thin to be attractive and popular. It’s important to recognize that what the media portrays is not entirely true. Health educators can have a positive influence on this issue by discussing it to prevent low self-esteem and eating disorders on the population.  I do believe that health educators can form a reliable support group to overcome the unrealistic expectation of body image.

Fostering self-esteem at a young age can help prevent many teens and young adult into thinking they have to look a certain way in order to feel great. Mental health is an important aspect of our general well-being. It can significantly affect our daily life by the way we feel about ourselves. TV, movies and magazines are all outlets of media that have a tremendous influence on teens. I also think that media is not embracing better diversity on body image. Magazines rely on airbrushing techniques to manipulate how a person looks and creates unrealistic expectations. Models are still unhealthy and underweight as well. We must learn how to filter the messages that the media is portraying as socially acceptable when they are not.

It’s the forbidden conversation that no parent wants to with their child; sex. But in my opinion I would prefer for my child to aware about this matter than to be naïve, be taken advantage of or face other concerns. Grandparents of teen parents are now facing the reality of being the primary caregiver of their grandchildren.  Kids are being exposed to peer-pressure at such a young age that you have to be prepared to take to your child about sex to prevent major consequences. Middle school will be a major transition for both female and male pre-teens. It would be best to talk your child about sex before they start a new school year. Summer time would be best since it just right around the corner before classes start. The ideal scenario would be a place where the parent and their pre-teen are comfortable environments where they can freely discuss without being interrupted or feel embarrassed. The family home is a favorable place to talk about this. Parents should approach their child when they are when they both not busy. The ideal place would be the kid’s room since that is the most relaxed environment.

The parents should approach the child how they normally do. The parent should be open and ready about having a conversation. Tone of voice plays a major part as well to have opened lines of communication. The conversation should not conclude that sex is shameful or scare a child by giving them unrealistic advice in an authoritative voice. A bad example of this would be as follows: Hey I’m just letting you know sex is bad, and I am kicking you about if you have a baby. Nothing was accomplished in this scenario. If you don’t teach your children about sex then, they will learn about it somewhere else. Whatever they learn elsewhere may be misleading from peer- pleasure and distortive. It is better that you have this conversation with them before they get the wrong information from others. Not only that but you are also bringing awareness about the subject so that they can become assertive individual. You are building a confident pre-teen to prepare them with real life situations that they will confront as they start to develop and grow.

When talking about subject start by asking a simple question such as if they know what sex is. They might not know or might have an idea. This is the moment where clarification and openness plays a role for the parent and child. It’s also a good idea to if you listen to what they have to say in order to build trust. Other things to talk about are relationships, sexual transmitted diseases, pregnancy and different forms contraceptives. This information can seem overwhelming and its best to talk about frequently with them so that they are at ease and aware. There are different ways that people may define sex and relationships. A helpful tool that is online is Planned Parenthood and Love is respect website. The sites offer great information for early development of a teen.

Mrs. Tunner is a woman living in hardship due to her and spouse not being able to work because of health reasons. The family is only able to get by with the limited funds that the husband receives through disability. With limited recourses, she has to make a budget in order to make the most out the aid. She challenged with the burden of making choices between paying the utility bills or food. There is also emphasizes these issues are not a small matter, but a big concern she faces on an everyday basis. As a mother, she has to make sure that her children are feed, and she stretches every dollar by buying frozen junk food. These foods have become so common and popular because they are an easy and cheap meal that can feed an entire family.
However, there is a consequence to eating these types of food because they contain unnecessary preservatives, and they do not have nutritional value. With that being said nutritional deficiency is causing a domino effect of many health problem that are preventable. Some of the major health problems that the population is facing across that the US today are obesity, diabetes and hypertension. These issues are so common now and are still on the rise. There is a partial truth to inequity making many people chose inexpensive unhealthier food. When junk food and whole food are eaten they satisfy the need to eat and cease hunger. Nevertheless, only one of them creates health issues. Many people consume foods without thinking what they just eaten. We have to reevaluate how we see and eat food to make healthier choices in order to make a lifestyle change that will improve our well-being.

Hello, my name is Erika, and I am thrilled to be a transfer student. This fall will be my first semester as a full-time student with distance education classes. I have two Associate degrees which are in: Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy and Liberal Arts. These degrees are an excellent foundation for better things to come along the way. There were other possible majors but decided to pursue Health Studies because it is an interesting topic. I also thought that a BS in Respiratory Care was redundant. Having an adverse portfolio is essential in today’s job market as well. My goal is to graduate by 2015 and eventually earn a Master of Science in Anesthesia. There is always room for growth and improvement, and look forward to learning something new in this course.
As a Houstonian, I am able to experience the diversity the city has to offer. My favorite color is all colors! I also have a Yorkshire terrier named Ace, and he is a handful. He has so much energy for a five-year-old dog and still acts like a puppy. I am usually busy with school and work. When there is free time, it is spent as quality time with family and traveling. My last trip was visiting Puebla, Mexico, but looking forward to the see Chichen Itza in Yucatan, Mexico. I have been on a rut with my eating habits and workouts. I hope to get back in track by at least committing three days of strength training and meal prepping. If anyone is interested in fitness, there is an app called Body Space that gives a structured workout program for free! Good luck and warm regards!
